DEEP is a special 8th Grade interdisciplinary project that combines Math, Science, Technology, and Physical Education. Scuba diving is used as a theme to connect the academics and to literally provide an immersive experience. The students have the opportunity to learn scuba diving with lessons in the pool.  Although certain medical conditions, such as asthma, will prevent participation in scuba diving, you can participate in DEEP, even if you are not diving. All students in DEEP fill out and sign medical and liability forms. Statistically, it is much safer than many other sports on campus, such as football and soccer.  DEEP teachers are Dr. Beans, Mr. Carabajal, Ms. Friedman.  Other faculty such as our English teacher, Mr. Oliviera, and members of Technology Department  are part of the team as well.  Most DEEP faculty add this program on top of their regular teaching duties.  Students provide their own swimwear, mask, fins, snorkel, and mesh gear bag.  The other gear, such as weights, tanks, regulators, and buoyancy compensators, are provided by In2Deep, who also teach the lessons in the pool, and St. Matthew’s. The students work in small groups to complete one of several research projects in either scientific method or engineering tracks. Students design and create websites to document their work and publish their findings. DEEP began in 1994, and hundreds of students have posted their work on the Student Websites page.
