DEEP History
The idea of DEEP was born while Mr. Harlan and former St. Matthew's Math teacher, Mrs. McCuskey, were driving home from an educational technology conference in Palm Springs in 1993. The idea was to combine all the examples of innovation from the conference into a single amazing program. Thus the idea for DEEP was developed on the drive back from Palm Springs.
The original DEEP projects were made using a computer application called Hyperstudio. The projects were great but could not be shared with others. Over the years, as technology progressed, students learned how to create websites so they could share their projects with everyone. Immediately, we started getting emails from people (doctors, college students, scuba divers, etc.) asking about the projects, the kids, and their data. People were learning from our students! It's exciting to see how this project continues to morph over the years, driven by the teachers' love for this project, the students' excitement, and the ever-changing force of technology.
